to neighbors’ houses asking a question “Trick or treat?”. Most of the homeowners provide treats such as candy or money rather than doing some tricks such as singing or short ghost story telling.
The beginning of dressing up in costumes tradition happened
Halloween is an annual holiday which is celebrated on October 31st each year. The festivity was started in Ireland some 2000 years ago after the ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain. In 1846, European people, especially the Irish, arrived in America as they fled from the Potato famine. After Landing In America, the Irish introduced Halloween tradition through out the continent. Since then Halloween has become popular in the USA and other countries.
The Halloween holiday consists of certain traditions and activities such as jack-o-lanterns, trick or treating, apple bobbing, Halloween costumes, haunted attractions and so on. These traditions have become popular in American mid-western culture and other countries.
Jack-o’-Lanterns are carved pumpkins featuring scary monster faces which have been a part of Halloween tradition for centuries. The tradition was started in 1837 for celebrating harvest time. In the 1900’s it became associated with Halloween. Inside a jack-o’-lantern, people cut off the pumpkin top and place a light at night inside for illumination effect. On the Halloween holiday, people decorate their home entrance with Jack-o’-Lanterns and other Halloween decoration such as skulls, gnome rocks, tombstones or scare crows.
Trick or treat
Treat or treating is the other Irish tradition brought to America as a part of the Halloween celebration. It had become popular in the USA in the 1930s where children go out in unique costumes
for superstitious reason to avoid being recognized by the ghost who came back to the earth on Halloween. Since the 18th century in Scotland and Ireland, children in costumes knocked on doors asking for coins, fruits or cake. In the old Halloween celebration, children’s and adults costumes where mystical figures such as vampires, ghosts, skeletons, devils, or witches. Nowadays, the trend has changed and people tend to choose pop culture costumes such as cartoon characters, animals, fairies, princesses/princes, celebrities, superheros, or sea creatures as the model although some still wear the old fashioned ones for the festivity.
The apple bobbing game is removing a floating apple from a tub of water by using their teeth to remove the fruit. Today’s practice of apple bobbing is said to be the adaptation of a roman tradition. The Romans had a tradition to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruits and trees’ , which took place in October. Pomona’s symbol is an apple which some people have related the game to.
Haunted attraction (e.g. Haunted House)
The most expected tradition of Halloween celebrations is the haunted attraction, an entertainment which is often designed to frighten people with what they see in the haunted locations. The haunted locations could be set up in a garage, a party area or a back yard of the homeowners home – if the celebration is in their homes- by inserting ghosts, horror movie characters, criminals, legendary figures and other creatures. For a more chilling atmosphere, horror sound effects, little lighting, and black decorations will be an advantaged.
